Set in the picturesque Northern California coast, the 10,000 square-mile College of the Redwoods education district spans 227 miles from Crescent City to Mendocino, California, just over three hours north of San Francisco. But despite offering three campuses and five instructional sites, the sheer size of the district makes it virtually impossible for many students to physically attend classes.
In order to boost enrollment and gain valuable tuition resources, the College needed to considerably expand its online course offerings. Budget restrictions on per student charges, however, prevented the College from increasing users on its existing Learning Management System. As a result, the College began looking at alternatives and determined that the rSmart Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment would help achieve their goals.
Although the original plan called for a pilot program that would gradually transition the campus through the summer and fall of 2009, the ever-changing budget situation in California forced the district to embark on an aggressive three-month implementation to ensure that funds would be available for the project.
