Together, rSmart and Sun are developing Kuali
software-based solutions that are optimized to run on the Solaris™
Operating System (Solaris OS), and open source software, including:
MySQL™ open source database, GlassFish™ application server, OpenSSO,
and project Open Enterprise Service Bus (Open ESB). As a result of this
initiative, colleges and universities can benefit from open solutions
with the enterprise-grade support and expertise of rSmart and Sun.
Few financial officers have had as much impact on accounting practice in higher education as Dave Lyons. In 1969, while serving as Comptroller of the University of Rochester, Dave designed the first automated financial records system ever created specifically for higher ed. This system (which was developed by Information Associates and was initially known as FAS, then FRS, and finally FRS Plus) introduced financial offices to Dave’s simple yet elegant approach to the chart of accounts. Based on six-digit account codes with attributes, his approach was novel and controversial at first but was soon successfully adopted by financial offices here and abroad.
Collaborative development of non-strategic applications. It's a mouth
full and probably the biggest opportunity for the CIO to reduce the
costs and increase the value of IT within their organizations. There
have been a number of successful collaborative software development
initiatives using an open source development model. Some examples: of
course there is Linux which is governed by what was the Open Source
Development Lab in Beaverton, Oregon (now The Linux Foundation ), and
the Eclipse Foundation an organization providing a universal tool set
for development of open source software, and one of my favorites the
Kuali Foundation a consortium of Universities that are developing,
sustaining and evolving a comprehensive suite of admin

San Joaquin Delta College is part of the California Community College education system, the largest system of higher education in the world. An award-winning technological innovation leader in the California education community, Delta was one of a group of institutions commissioned by the Foundation for California Community Colleges to evaluate enterprise resource planning systems to determine which might best meet their needs.
As a leading public research institution, the University of Arizona must comply with significant and complex accounting and reporting requirements imposed by granting and government agencies. A number of years ago, the U of A recognized that their current system was not meeting departmental and institutional needs, and a change was required. Indiana University approached U of A about joining a consortium composed of innovation leaders in the higher education community, for the purpose of developing a software program called Kuali, an ERP system built to specifically address the business needs of higher education.

I'm headed to the NACUBO conference where I'll be speaking about the Kuali community with Kathleen McNeely (AVP at Indiana University and Kuali Financial System's business leader), and Rich Andrews, Controller at UC Irvine (an investing and implementing institution).
The post describes a competitiveness cluster in Paris called SYSTEM@TIC PARIS-REGION, that has established a working group on open source (Logiciel Libre) who's goal is to "help structure the open source ecosystem in the Paris area."

Red Hat settled a patent dispute this week that had potentially wide reaching impact to the open source community. Matt Asay points out nicely that Red Hat has demonstrated the open-source way to quash patent lawsuits.
The National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) announced last week Indiana University is the recipient of the association’s 2008 Innovation Award. The NACUBO Awards program is focused on innovation in the management of college and university business and financial affairs.
