One great advantage of open source software is that it allows you to make choices that are not usually available with traditional proprietary applications. As a user of open source software, you can: contribute to the development of the software by being a “producer” of software code, or "consume” the software without doing any development work at all; customize the source code, or make no changes; connect with peers in the open source community, or work independently; and provide your own software support, or rely on commercial support services.
