When an institution implements the rSmart Sakai CLE, the rSmart team usually trains a small group of core users, who then go on to train other staff. But schools often discover the need for additional training—either for new staff members who are unfamiliar with Sakai, or for existing staff who want to become more effective in using the CLE. Many institutions eventually provide their own in-house training.

To help schools meet this demand, rSmart has been putting together an online training course, called the rSmart Sakai CLE Certification training. Designed primarily for instructors, it will take users through a series of interactive lesson modules in which they'll learn everything necessary for developing and conducting a course in Sakai--such as creating and managing course and project sites, adding different kinds of content to sites, and choosing the right tools for specific objectives. An alternative to rSmart's basic Student Information System (SIS) integration, this process can be used to read a much richer set of data extracts. These extracts include detailed user, enrollment, term, course, section, and class data in a more robust model. This data is then loaded into the CLE, but no course shells are created. The faculty or administrators then create the Sites within the CLE themselves by selecting rosters they are associated with and assigning to sections or new sites as they wish. This gives a great deal of flexibility to the site creator at creation time. The data extraction requires a greater level of effort because of the complexity of the data model.

An rSmart functional consultant will analyze up to five courses within your existing CMS/LMS and will build courses with sample migration content in your CLE instance. These sample migration courses will include content from Lessons, Testing tools, Assignments, Discussion Boards, Gradebook and Content File storage. You will receive a detailed migration report that will:

1. Document the workflow of migrating a course from your legacy system to the rSmart CLE.
2. Provide options regarding additional custom development work, if requested.
3. Recommend a migration plan to help ensure user acceptance and adoption

Designed to supplement the Migration Assessment (see above), a functional consultant will travel to your institution to train up to fifteen Faculty Members, Helpdesk Users, Instructional Designers and any other members of your migration project on implementing a migration plan and performing migration tasks. rSmart will assess your gradebook integration needs to determine the level of effort involved in integrating your gradebook with the CLE.

Based on the results of your Gradebook Integration assessment, your implementation may require additional time and effort.  The mechanism that communicates grades to an external system is performed by a plugin called a "provider". rSmart can develop a custom provider to write the grades to a database, communicate with a web service, or whatever mechanism the external SIS system provides.

If your Sakai instance is premise-based and you are using the rSmart Sakai CLE core code, rSmart will upgrade your instance to the next service pack. The standard level of effort for this service is eight hours. Upgrades that exceed this level of effort will be billed at $175.00 per hour for each additional hour.

Occasionally, an rSmart customer will discover that an enhancement is needed in order to move forward with an implementation of the rSmart CLE. rSmart will work with your team to determine whether your enhancement request could benefit others using the Sakai CLE and whether it makes sense to put the enhancement into the core CLE code. rSmart will assist you in determining requirements for any enhancement you request and scope the work accordingly. rSmart will occasionally deny an enhancement request if it becomes apparent that the request will fork the supportable rSmart CLE code.

Currently, there is no SCORM player included as part of the Sakai CLE Code. rSmart has successfully integrated the Icodeon SCORM player with the Sakai CLE, and this player can be integrated into your instance. This service includes favorable licensing for the Icodeon software.
