We would like to thank the many users who attended our recent "Build a Course in the rSmart Sakai CLE" webinar. The "spring" version of our Sakai Summer institute, which we now offer on a quarterly basis, this two-day workshop drew more than 150 attendees.
Users came from a variety of institutions, including ten rSmart clients. In mySakai, rSmart's free, hosted instance of the rSmart Sakai CLE, they learned how to create and conduct a course site in the CLE, through demonstrations and hands-on experience.

The upcoming CLE 2.8 release will include two "stealthed" tools: Clog and Sign-Up. Both tools show great promise for their ease of use and functionality. As our clients gain experience with these tools, rSmart will be considering whether to add them as fully supported tools in our standard rSmart Sakai CLE distribution:

I have been watching Instructure and it's move to offer part of its Canvas learning platform under an AGPLv3 open source license with great interest.
First, Canvas is a compelling product, with some great usabilty and features. I also welcome Instructure's move to a (forked?) open source path, which I think helps evolve platform options and the marketplace in useful ways.
I am unconvinced, however, by a main thread Instructure CEO Josh Coates takes up in his recent blog post on Instructure's open source strategy.
The upcoming 2.7 CLE release will include two previously unsupported “stealthed” tools: Profile2 and Blogs (BlogWow). Each tool provides users with some new resources for creating and sharing information in the CLE.
Profile2 is an alternative to the Profile tool. It offers a Facebook-style interface, as well as integration with Twitter. In Profile2, you may:

After the announcement of Google's CloudCourse being open-sourced, I decided to give it a try and see exactly what's under the hood...at the very least, it would give me a chance to try out a Django app via Google App Engine, which alone is worth the time.
Long story short: I got CloudCourse up and running in a matter of minutes.
Readers of our Smart Talk newsletter may recall the "2+3 Hybrid" project, which was the focus of an article earlier this year. With many community members contributing to Sakai 3 development, this project's goal is to help provide a smooth transition from Sakai 2, by creating a "hybrid" mode for Sakai 3. In this mode, users log into Sakai 3, but still have access to the Sakai 2 environment.
In the upcoming 2.7 CLE release, you’ll find some handy new options for accessing and managing content. This release integrates the CLE with two popular services—Google Docs and iTunes U from Apple.
If you’re attending the 2010 Sakai Conference, be sure to leave room on your calendar for the pre-conference events taking place on Monday, June 14.
On Monday night, please join us for an rSmart Customer Appreciation Dinner, being held at the Centennial Room in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Enjoy food and drinks while you meet with rSmart staff, other rSmart clients, and invited guests. For more information, click here.
During the day, you'll find several events to choose from, including the following:
